Review 8/17/2010
I made a reservation over the phone for Starving Students to help me move, they quoted me 88.99 per hr, two hr minimum, 2 man crew. Because I wanted a professional company and was only moving across town, less than 10 miles, I decided we could probably do the move in no more than 3 hrs. They gave me the window of time of 8am-12pm. They call after 12 to let me know they were running late with another move but was on their way. An hour later they called, they were on their way from Long Beach to my area, the Inland Empire and was sending a 3rd man to get the move done sooner. They got to my apt at 3pm. The head mover asked me did I know about the deposit, I told him no. I thought to myself, maybe they forgot to tell me over the phone or I missed that in the confirmation email. He and his crew came into my apartment and wanted to know if they told me everything had to be in boxes because of the way they packed the truck, I said no, I had mostly boxes but I had the kids put clothes in bags. I finally said ok, just move the beds, the family can just do the rest. He gets on his walkie talkie and his mgr (or whoever) was saying something about yea she knew about the deposit. The mover looked perplexed, I was ready to get the move started, so I called the mgr and he said the deposit is $500.00 CASH to move a 3 bedroom home and they would deduct what I owed them at the end of the move. Ok, give 3 strangers cash, I think not. The mgr was rude and nasty, he said customer service had told me about the deposit. Needless to say, they didn't help me move. As the movers were walking out, they explained that this happens a lot, and they also told me there was a 22.7% fee on top of the hourly rate that goes toward their workers comp and something else, and another fee to pay for the 3rd mover. I called today to pretend I was just booking a move, and they again neglected to tell me about the deposit. Weird. This company needs to starve and they should be ashamed of themselves for their business practices. Never book them, judging from my experience and the other reviews they are ripe offs. They prey on desperate people to make their money. Had to go crawling to UHaul to rent a truck (they usually have 1 person working the desk and 50 customers) but at least I got a truck. God bless and be careful.
